Nestled within the emerald contours of the Madulkelle tea estates, the Tea Experience Center is a contemporary tribute to Sri Lanka’s rich plantation heritage. This project reimagines the traditional tea factory as a holistic, multi-sensory destination where industrial precision meets artisanal hospitality.

Architectural Concept

The design adopts an industrial-vernacular aesthetic, utilizing a robust steel portal frame that echoes the structural honesty of historical tea factories. The exterior is clad in warm timber verticality, allowing the building to dissolve into the surrounding forest and tea bushes. A prominent glass gable serves as a “window to the heritage,” flooding the interior with northern light while offering visitors panoramic views of the mist-covered hills.

Spatial Experience

The interior is defined by a dramatic triple-height atrium, organised around a central axis that guides visitors through the lifecycle of tea:

  • The Production Floor: A transparent “live” laboratory where visitors can witness the processing, sorting, and packaging of tea. The use of polished concrete and exposed steel maintains an authentic industrial rigor.

  • The Social Hub: Integrated seamlessly with the production areas, the ground floor features a warm, timber-clad tasting bar and café. Large communal tables encourage dialogue between the connoisseur and the casual traveler.

  • The Mezzanine Galleries: Floating steel walkways lead to elevated seating pods and private tasting rooms, providing a quiet vantage point to observe both the internal craftsmanship and the external landscape.

Sustainability & Materiality

By utilizing a lightweight steel structure and local timber, the project minimizes its physical footprint on the sloping terrain. The large-scale glazing reduces the need for artificial lighting during the day, while the high, vented roof allows for natural stack-effect ventilation—keeping the space cool in the tropical climate without heavy reliance on mechanical systems.
